“The Washing of
Regeneration” Titus 3:5
J.W. Shepherd compiled his Handbook on
Baptism in the late 1800’s. In 1894, the introduction to this
book was written by J.A. Harding, founder of Harding University
in Searcy, Arkansas. He wrote, “…the questions concerning
baptism are living, practical issues, which must be considered
by every human being who intelligently endeavors to follow
Christ…The duty to be baptized confronts every man who reads the
Bible…it comes up again and again in many places—in commands,
examples, exhortations, and in many incidental ways…” (p. 14).
Though written over a century ago, the truth of this statement
regarding baptism still stands.
One such New Testament reference to baptism
is found in Paul’s phrase “the washing of regeneration” in Titus
3:5. In his exhaustive work, Shepherd quotes no less than
thirty commentators to prove the consistent belief of scholars
that this phrase refers to baptism. Let’s see if our study of
the Biblical evidence lends the same conclusion.
