“The Washing of Regeneration” Titus 3:5

J.W. Shepherd compiled his Handbook on Baptism in the late 1800’s.  In 1894, the introduction to this book was written by J.A. Harding, founder of Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas.  He wrote, “…the questions concerning baptism are living, practical issues, which must be considered by every human being who intelligently endeavors to follow Christ…The duty to be baptized confronts every man who reads the Bible…it comes up again and again in many places—in commands, examples, exhortations, and in many incidental ways…” (p. 14).  Though written over a century ago, the truth of this statement regarding baptism still stands.

One such New Testament reference to baptism is found in Paul’s phrase “the washing of regeneration” in Titus 3:5.  In his exhaustive work, Shepherd quotes no less than thirty commentators to prove the consistent belief of scholars that this phrase refers to baptism.  Let’s see if our study of the Biblical evidence lends the same conclusion.

Dear Visitor,

We are glad you have taken the time to visit and hope that you find this site useful.  At Courtland Avenue Church of Christ we firmly believe in the Great Commission's command to "preach the gospel to every creature" (Mark 16:15).  Thus, this website is designed not only as a helpful aid to our own members but for all those across the world.  So, even if you are not from the area we still want to help and be of service to you.

Feel free to contact us about any questions, comments or if we can help in any way.  If you are from the area, it is our hope that you will not just visit us here, but join us for Bible study and worship anytime.  We hope that you will find us a group of Christians, seeking to worship God "in spirit and truth" with others striving to do the same (John 4:24).  Again, thanks for visiting and keep in touch.  We want to help and your soul is worth it!

With love,

The Christians at Courtland Avenue
