The sin of “adultery” will keep us from heaven if we
fail to repent of it.
In Matthew 19:9, Jesus mentioned two situations of adultery saying,
“...whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries
another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced
commits adultery.”
Clearly, one who divorces his spouse unlawfully and remarries is
committing adultery. On the other hand, one who has been divorced (put
away) and remarries also commits adultery.
An “adulterer” is simply “one who has unlawful intercourse with the
spouse of another” (Vine’s). Jesus also warns of the danger of adultery
occurring in the heart (Matthew 5:28).
If married, our desire should be for our spouse and none other (Heb.
13:4). If unmarried, we should not desire a relationship from a married
person!
