Godliness

Numerous times in Scripture we are encouraged to practice “godliness” or to be “godly.” What does this word mean? Does it mean we are supposed to be “like God?” Well, obviously not, because there are certain traits God possesses that man cannot possess (omniscience, omnipotence, omnipresence).

The term “godliness” comes from the noun EUSEBEIA. According to Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words this means “to be devout, denotes that piety which, characterized by a Godward attitude, does that which is well-pleasing to Him.” The term “godly” often comes from the Greek EUSEBES meaning “pious, devout, godly, indicating reverence manifested in actions.”

The definitions of these terms may be easier to grasp with a comparison. One who acts “manly” does things that meet the world’s standards of masculinity. Now, depending on the culture, the perceived characteristics of masculinity vary. Yet, suffice it to say that a “manly man” does manly things.

Now, consider the term “godly.” The “godly” person does those things that meet God’s expectations for His creatures. Read the Word of God and know what those standards and expectations are to live a godly life.
