It’s about this time of year parents begin getting
their kids ready to go back to school.
As you walk down the aisles of stores you will see kids making sure they
have enough paper, pencils and pens. For some kids, they may need to
purchase a graphing calculator or a compass. The bookstores on college
campuses will have lines running out the door as their students search
for books corresponding to course numbers.
Many mothers will be crying as they drop their child off at school for
the first time. A few dads might shed a tear too as they sign checks to
pay the college tuition. The kids will be sad as their summer is
replaced with nights of homework followed by early mornings in
classrooms.
As parents, we want our children to be well-equipped as they embark upon
a new school year. So, we buy them shoes that fit, clothes to last the
year and the right supplies.
In the Bible, Timothy’s mother and grandmother were commended for
providing for him. Yet, their provision had nothing to do with clothes,
books or athletic uniforms.
Paul writes in 2 Timothy 3:14-17, “...continue in the things which
you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned
them, and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which
are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ
Jesus. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable
for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in
righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped
for every good work.”
Timothy was “thoroughly equipped” for the journey of life because
he was taught the Scriptures by those who loved him (2 Tim. 1:5). This
enabled him to be an “example” in his “youth” (1 Timothy
4:12).
The child who has been taught to love the Bible has the best education
on earth. He will withstand temptation, teach his friends and bear much
fruit. Are your kids spiritually prepared for the upcoming school year?
Think about it.
