Learn from Olene

The Lord's church has been in existence since the first Pentecost following the resurrection of Jesus (Acts 2:1-47).  However, this local congregation of believers has only been in existence for slightly over sixty years.

Recently, Olene Gerald, one of the first members of the Courtland Avenue Church of Christ passed away.  Though shut-in for several years preceding her death, the local members here can learn from her life.

First we can learn of her dedication.  It takes dedication to decide, with others, to start a faithful congregation of believers.  It may have been easy for these Christians to compromise their values and simply join an already existing denomination in Kokomo.  Yet, though few, they stood for the truth.

Second, we may learn about true faithfulness.  Many are quick to leave churches with small memberships, disorganized leadership, and minimal comforts.  Yet Olene worshipped with the church despite the fact they started with only ten members.  She helped take part though they met in a crude building above a dilapidated grocery store heated by a pot-bellied stove.  She was a part of a growing church despite the fact they were without a local preacher or full-time evangelist.

Finally, Olene teaches us something about enduring trials.  She became a widow with three girls to raise at age 27.  One daughter preceded her in death and she died at age 35.  Even so, two of Olene's daughters are still faithful to the Lord today and attend the Courtland Ave. Church of Christ.

What is it that led to the faithfulness of those two children?  Maybe it was a mother who taught her children about complete loyalty to truth.  Maybe it was that those daughters saw their mother stay faithful to the Lord in less than ideal circumstances.  Maybe it was a mom who did not allow tragedy to come between her and Jesus Christ but allowed Jesus Christ to help her through the tragedy.

Strong churches do not only begin with these types of members, but must be sustained with them.  Are you dedicated to Jesus Christ and His church above all else?  Are you faithful despite the circumstances?  Do you allow Jesus and His church to help you through trials?

Think about it.
