Family Bible study has taken a backseat to just about anything these days. Parents find time to watch television, vacation and pamper themselves while their Bibles gather dust. Children are often fed a steady dose of entertainment rather than an education of divine enlightenment from God’s Word. Meanwhile, our nation is divided. Families are being torn apart with divorce and bitterness. Children are having sex, doing drugs and spinning out of control at earlier ages than ever before. Individuals are increasingly dependent upon prescription and illegal drugs due to depression and guilt. Could it be that our culture’s downward spiral goes hand-in-hand with our refusal to allow God’s instruction manual to be a part of our daily lives? In these articles, we hope to consider why every family needs the Bible. There are three big questions most people will ask at some point in their lives. Where did I come from? Why am I here? Where do we go after this? We will examine the Bible’s answer to the first question in this article. The question of origins is fueled with debate. Since Darwin, the debate of evolution vs. creationism has raged in the science world. This debate is not just centered around science, but also around worldviews. In fact, evolutionists often attack creationists on the ground they simply believe in creationism because it is taught in the Bible. While God’s creation of the world is taught in the Bible, it is also supported by scientific evidence. There is not enough room in this article to cover the scientific arguments (let me know if you would like information though). One is often left with an unconvincing answer from
the world of science. We came from apes? The apes came from a series of
mutations from some single-celled organism? The single-celled organism
came from a chemical reaction in rocks? Okay...so, where did the rocks
come from? A big bang? So, where did the “big bang” come from? My kind,
evolutionary science teachers could never answer that question. |

Design demands designer. Something created demands a Creator. God’s Word confirms this reasoning. Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” The very word “Genesis” means “beginnings.” Not only does the Bible confirm God as the Creator of the universe it confirms birds, fish and beasts all reproduce “according to its kind” (1:21,24). In the natural world, this is exactly what we witness. God’s Word answers the problem of origins. |
