Several months ago, an article in this column dealt
with the proposition of homosexual marriage. One of the points made was
that if this could be legalized it would open the floodgates to other
forms of sexual immorality. After all, if it is discrimination to refuse
marriage to two homosexuals “in love” then wouldn’t it be discrimination
to refuse marriage to a man “in love” with several women or vice versa?
Recently, HBO aired a new series called “Big Love.” It is about a
fictional polygamous family where one husband, played by Bill Paxton, is
married to three wives. Interestingly, this show is beginning to gain
sympathy from the pro-polygamy crowd.
Mary Batchelor, the director of Principle Voices, a polygamy advocacy
group, said of the show, “This is a glimpse of a family that is
mainstream.”
After TV shows like “Will & Grace” and “Ellen” tried to normalize
homosexuality, it only took a few years to see this nation in the midst
of a raging debate about legalizing homosexual marriage. Don’t be
surprised if we see the same thing about polygamy in the future as well.
God’s plan for marriage from the beginning has been one man and one
woman for one lifetime (see Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:4-6; 1 Corinthians
7:2). Real Christians should not be swayed by the world’s attempt to
normalize sin.
