In 1 Peter 4, Peter encourages the brethren to
avoid their previous sins and serve God. Those previous sins are listed
in verse 3, “...when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness,
revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries.”
There are certain parties and gatherings Christians are to avoid. What
kind? The kind the word of God warns of in 1 Peter 4:3—drinking parties.
Some might ask, “Well, what is a drinking party?” This is obvious. It is
a party where people are going to be drinking.
Is your holiday party at work going to consist of co-workers boozing it
up? Do most of the classmates who attend your prom, reunion or school
dance drink before, after or during the occasion? What about that New
Year’s Eve party, your neighbor’s barbecue, the girl’s night out?
Some folks seem to think it is impossible to have a good time without
alcohol. Some people even call themselves “Christians” who throw these
types of gatherings. We need to make sure we are followers of Christ in
more than just name. It needs to also be shown by our deeds (Luke 6:46).
What will happen if we attend?
Peter says, “They will give an account to Him who is ready to judge
the living and the dead” (1 Peter 4:5).
