Preaching the Word Abroad: Uganda
Francis Okech
Francis Okech gave up his job as a banker to preach
the gospel in Jinja, Uganda in 2005. In January of 2006, he started a
congregation of believers from scratch called the Lakeside Church of
Christ in Jinja. 14 months later, the congregation has grown to 45
members and is still steadily growing as Francis sows the seed.
Francis has made great sacrifices to preach the
gospel and his life story is already an inspiration. On June 11, 2004
Francis lost his wife during an operation immediately following the
birth of his twin children. Since then, he has raised his four children
(10, 6 and 3 years old) alone in addition to preaching the gospel. His
local congregation struggles to contribute financially because of their
severe poverty. Francis has described them as “...a very poor
congregation, maybe the poorest in the world.” Indeed, in terms of
poverty, Uganda is considered a third-world country (www.nationsonline.org).
Yet, we are reminded of the words of Jesus in Luke 6:20, “Blessed are
you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.” We appreciate the
dedication and hard work of Francis and are glad to help in his support.

may comfortably provide for his family while preaching the gospel. If
